KHK Kiteboarding Instructor:

Hopefully this document will answer all of your questions about the job, but if not please call or e-mail and we will be happy to help you!

Job Requirements:

PASA Level 1 or higher Instructor certification and prior teaching experience is preferred but we are willing to train the right kind of person. You must be a skilled rider, good person and excellent communicator. If you are not PASA certified, you will need to take an Instructor Certification Program from Chris Moore before teaching in order to be covered on our insurance policy. We do not tolerate drug use of any kind while on the job. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, honesty, a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility are the main attributes that we require of our staff. If this sounds like you, please provide at least 3 professional references who can attest to witnessing these traits.

Time Line:

Season opens March 15th and closes Nov 15th. We are looking for several instructors for the upcoming 2010 season.

Non-Compete Contract:

All instructors will be required to sign a standard non-compete contract that states you agree not to work for any other kite school or start your own kite school within 150 miles of any KHK Kiteboarding Center for a period of 3 years. Since we work hard to train our instructors and invest valuable time and energy into them, we want to keep them around for a while! Also, you will learn the KHK Kiteboarding Skills Progression Teaching System which is considered proprietary information. Besides, KHK has a very competitive pay and is very busy…so why would you want to work for any other kite school?

Housing:

We have a beautiful kite school and resort location right on the beach. We also have employee housing available. Contact us in advance to reserve your housing! Contact the Kitty Hawk Kites (KHK) Human Resources Manager, Deanna Lyons at 252-441-4127 or dlyons@kittyhawk.com.

Pay:

If you are a certified/experienced instructor you will be required to complete 15 hours of teaching at a training pay rate of approximately 20% of the lesson revenue. Commission rates do vary depending on how many students you are teaching at the same time. Contact Chris Moore for the complete commission schedule. During this time you will be given training and support to ensure that you are a confident, safe and effective instructor. After the 15 hours, compensation benefits increase to include a 10% of net commission on equipment sales. This is approximately $50-$70 on a kite + board package. Also most clients tip quite well if you take a personal interest in the success of your student!

If you are an inexperienced instructor, you will be required to shadow at least 10 hours of lessons with no pay. Then you will be paid 20% of the lesson revenue until you can perform up to the level of an experienced instructor. You would also need to be PASA certified and would be expected to pay for the certification course.

KHK Kiteboarding Center provides all the equipment needed for teaching along with a fleet of boats and waverunners for upwind rides and for teaching on the fly. We provide the harnesses, helmets, and vests that are also required. If you are able to provide your own water craft for teaching, we will pay a higher percentage rate. You would be responsible for gas and maintenance on your watercraft.

Work Schedule:

Lessons begin at 9:00am daily. You are expected to show up at least 30 minutes prior to this to prepare for the course. You will be required to start on time and be prepared, although if it’s a late wind day they may begin later in the day. Our most popular lesson is the Way to Fly course. This consists of two 3 hour instructional courses. 9-12 and 1-4 each day.

Usually you will be done teaching by 4:30 or so, some days later if you are selling equipment after the lesson. There will be ample time in the evening to go riding.

Since kiteboarding is a wind dependent sport, there is no guarantee of working hours, but typically we have extremely good kiteboarding conditions at least 3-4 days a week on average. We alternate first choice and second choice for daily lessons. Lead instructor has first choice of work, the long term instructor is next in line, and then the short term instructor.

Location:

We are located on the Outer Banks of NC, beautiful barrier islands of the coast of North Carolina. We are famous for many reasons, the history of flight started here with the Wilbur and Orville Wright Monument and museum. We have 4 lighthouses, including the tallest on the East Coast. Named the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” there are world class dive sites just off the coastline. Pristine bird sanctuaries and some of the most beautiful kayaking you can imagine. We are also home of the largest hang gliding school in the country and you have FREE access to our hang gliding lessons as well as our kayak eco-tours!

The Kiteboarding:

We boast some of the best kiteboarding conditions in the world! Super consistent winds, warmer waters that extend the season, and our famous flatwater “sound” riding paradise. 390 sq. miles of shallow water that is only waist deep! That is right the perfect flat water riding spot! We also have some of the best surf on the entire East Coast. The Outer Banks is famous for its incredible surf! You won’t be disappointed!
